Five Places to Visit in St. Lucia

When it comes to planning a Caribbean vacation, places like Aruba, the Bahamas, and the US Virgin Islands almost always appear on top of the list. However, if you want something other than those mentioned above, then you definitely would want to check out St. Lucia. And as you will find out in this article, there are a lot of interesting sights that this lesser known island has to offer.

Background

St. Lucia, also referred to as Saint Lucia, is a part of the Windward Islands group of the Caribbean region. With an area of 617 square kilometers, St. Lucia is one of the larger islands of the group. The island is also one of the more populous, with a total population of around 183,600.

One of the great things about the island is that it has English as its official language, and almost everyone speaks it, which means you can readily converse with anyone. On the other hand, the island’s French heritage shows well alongside its British one, making for a unique travel experience.

Places that you must visit

Now that you have a little of what St. Lucia has to offer, here are some of the places on the island that you should definitely check out.

1. Castries

The island’s capital city of Castries is the first place that you would want to explore, even if for a little time. Particularly, you would want to drop by the colorful Castries market, where you will be able to get anything from fresh vegetables to local handicrafts for souvenirs. The market also lets you experience a bit of the local culture if you are interested.

Close to Port Castries, you can also visit Rainforest Adventures in our St. Lucia park, combining nature and adventure in eco-friendly excursions ranging from zip lines to aerial trams and from nature trails to bird watching spots.

2. Marigot Bay

Just a few minutes ride from the capital is Marigot Bay. This is arguably the most popular waterfront location on the island.

The entirety of the beach is dotted with numerous palm trees, giving it that beautiful tropical look, while green hillsides offer a picturesque backdrop. And for the film buffs, Marigot Bay is where the film Doctor Doolittle (the 1967 original, not the 1996 Eddie Murphy-starrer) was shot.

3. Soufriere

For your next stop, the fishing town of Soufriere offers a lot of fascinating sites to see. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the town square is particularly a popular one for both sightseers and devotees. You can also catch a glimpse of the town’s rich history through the various buildings still standing, like the old courthouse that has since been turned into a restaurant.

It is also worth noting that French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s wife Josephine was born in the town. And if you want to get a good view of the town’s entirety, along with the bay area, head to nearby Veux Port.

4. The Pitons

Places to Visit in St Lucia – The Pitons are things to do in St. Lucia most prominent geographical features. The Gros (larger) Piton rises to around 798 meters while the Petit (smaller) Piton is around 750 meters. If you are not a seasoned climber, though, think twice about heading to them because both peaks are considered difficult. In that case, you can still enjoy the beauty of both from a distance.

5. Pigeon Island National Park

Places to Visit in St Lucia – Pigeon Island is a small island across Rodney Bay that served as an outpost for the British during the Napoleonic wars. Today, you can explore the various military buildings used during that time, as well as learn more about the naval battles that took place via the information center. There are also two white sand beaches where you can relax after all that.
